No Words

There are no words for the horrific shooting that took place in Christchurch, New Zealand today.

Like so many of these shootings of which just one is too many, your first thought goes to the victims and their last terrifying moments. You think about all the families and communities that have been shattered by these seconds of violence.

I’m worried about the inevitable fractions this will cause: the hate that will flare up from people obsessed with scoring political points from tragedies. The fact that people will take ‘two sides’ on this issue, even though there’s only one reasonable ‘side’ to take: that in a free society, people don’t have the right to commit violence on others, regardless of who they are or what they believe. That your right to your opinion stops at the other guy’s nose.

And yet of course now the xenophobes will blame outsiders, the anti-gun people will blame guns, the Islamaphobes will blame Muslims, and the liberals will blame white people–because why not take people’s suffering and make hay from it?

Just take a minute and remember 49 lives tragically cut short, and be thankful that this violence is still exceedingly rare such that we have the privilege to play ‘told you so’ in our free time. Take this time to hug your family closer and don’t be so quick to dive into the cesspool of hate yourself.

RIP.
